CAMP EDWARDS, Mass. - The 1st Battalion, 101st Field Artillery Regiment, Massachusetts Army National Guard, recognized the unit’s recent affiliation with the 10th Mountain Division as part of the Army’s Associated Units Program during a re-patch ceremony at Tactical Training Base Kelley on Joint Base Cape Cod Oct. 16, 2016.

The program establishes formal relationships between identified units across the Active Army, Army Reserve and the Army National Guard that would allow those units to train together before deployment.

The 101st has been associated with the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from the Vermont Army National Guard for years and the units deployed to Afghanistan together. Now, both units have been associated with the 10th Mountain Division, stationed in Fort Drum, New York.

Presiding over the ceremony, Col. (P) Francis Magurn, land component commander, Massachusetts National Guard said, “Embrace the future, but respect the past. Your battle streamers and the combat patches you wear showcase the history that represents your warrior achievement.”

The unit’s commander and command sergeant major presented the patches to the soldiers during the ceremony.

“Today is yet another historic day for the regiment as we start another chapter in our rich heritage by removing the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and replace it with the 10th Mountain Division Patch, said, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Holloway, Battalion Commander, 1st Battalion, 101st Field Artillery Regiment, Massachusetts Army National Guard. “It’s fitting that we held this ceremony here at Tactical Training Base Kelley, which is named after Sgt. Michael J. Kelley, a member of the Regiment’s Echo Battery who died June 8, 2005 while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.”
